How to decide on the right kitchen layout

When looking at kitchen designs, whether from scratch for a new house, or as a renovation of existing, the layout is a critical element. With the right layout you can enjoy the space and the flow of the kitchen, making it a pleasure to entertain and work in. In order to find the right layout you need to think of the purpose it serves and how you and your family will interact in it. Here are some tips on deciding the right layout for your Wollongong kitchen.

Small space row kitchens

If you have a limited amount of space, then layout is even more important, as well as storage tricks! For areas which feel like a long hallway, with two walls on either side, the “row kitchen” style is best. Counter tops are placed on either side of the walls with a walkway down the middle. If you have a window, the sink is best placed here to allow for natural light to come in and give an open feel. Efficiency is maximised by still having bench space on either side of the walkway, as well as appliances within arm’s reach of each other.

Island benches

Island benches can be great for both large and small spaces. For those with a single wall where the counter is, an island bench can be great to add a little more preparation space, as well as doubling as a breakfast bar (or even dining table for those in studio apartments!) For larger spaces, the island bench can be great as it gives you a more social area to prepare food, as its likely you can face towards another room such as the dining or living, rather than against the wall.

Horseshoe kitchens

For those with more space, the horseshoe or U-shape kitchen is an option. It gives you three areas of preparation, as well as ample cabinet and appliance space. The only downfall is that the walkway is smaller than some others, so adding a second cook can pose a space issue.
