Why choose a Kikuyu turf?

We Australians love our sports, and one thing that a lot of sports have in common is being played on a great green turf. With it’s origins in East Africa, Kikuyu turf makes for an excellent lawn for Australian sporting grounds. With strong traits that help to keep it vibrant all year, Kikuyu is ideal for families with dogs and children. But what exactly are these traits that make Kikuyu a great choice for commercial lawns?

Kikuyu lawns are very fast growing, and grow in a matted manner. This means that not only are they established quickly when compared to other lawn types, but they are also resilient to heavy foot traffic. This resilience makes them ideal for fast paced sports such as football or rugby, and is a trait that has made it useful for rough areas on golf courses. Should a section be damaged or removed, it’s fast growing nature will enable it to be regrown easily.

A Kikuyu turf grows best when it is exposed to a great deal of sunshine, which makes it ideal for parks and recreational ovals. Spreading out quickly and forming dense matting, Kikuyu breed turfs tend to blanket any other plant life they encounter. This blanketing and matting works to prevent other plant species from sprouting, minimising the chance of weeds growing within the lawn. This rapid and aggressive growth is to be monitored however, as it has the potential to grow inside of cracks which can damage buildings.

While most lawns will tend to slow their growth over winter, Kikuyu turf breeds will remain active. For sporting grounds, this means that the fast growing and quick repairing traits of Kikuyu turf will be as resilient and vibrant as it is in summer. This growth can even take place under mild frost conditions. Kikuyu’s continued winter growth does not imply a limitation in warmer conditions however.

With rapid growth, great colour all year round and a hardy nature, Kikuyu turfs make for an excellent and cost-effective lawn for commercial applications.
