6 essential measures for home security

I bet we can all agree that after a long and tiring day, nothing makes us more excited than the thought of finally heading home where we can feel relaxed, happy and safe.

However, as we hear reports of burglary around the neighbourhood, we can’t help but feel worried and threatened. And suddenly, your home is no longer your safe haven.

So, how can you protect your home from these unwanted visitors? The answer’s simple: make your home less of an easy target. Here are some security measures that can help keep burglars away.

Reinforce your door.

Remember those movie scenes where they kick down the door? Or when they pick the lock to break in? Well, that can really happen. Make sure to reinforce your door with strong and sturdy materials.

For added security, consider installing a deadbolt or a digital lock to enhance your home’s defences.

Secure your windows.

When they finally give up picking the lock or kicking the door, where do you think they’ll go? The fragile, breakable glass window of course!

Having metal grilles outside your windows can prevent them from breaking in. You may also choose to have window alarms installed to alert anyone nearby of the suspicious activity.

Install security systems.

If you’re often away and need to look out for your home, then installing security systems will definitely help your case. Just the sight of a security camera is enough to give them second thoughts.

For better defence, consider equipping your home with alarm systems and motion detectors.

Eliminate places where burglars may hide.

Thick bushes and dim-lighted areas can serve as wonderful hiding spots for burglars. Work on areas that can provide cover for them, so you’ll have a clear line of sight.

Be smart in keeping your valuables.

Do you keep a spare key? Let me guess – it’s hidden under the mat. Or perhaps on a potted plant in your front porch. If you want to keep burglars out, stop hiding your spare key in obvious places.

Assuming they succeed in entering, are your prized possessions well hidden? Is your safe’s code impossible to guess? Remember – they won’t get anything if they have nothing to steal.

Trick burglars into thinking that someone’s home.

An unsupervised home is an easy target for burglars. If you’re going away for a couple of days, it’s best to invest in light timers. You can ask your neighbours to look out for your home, too.

Because of the rising number of burglary cases in some parts of Sydney, home security in areas such as the Hills, Blacktown and Parramatta has never been so important.

I know that we can’t control how burglars think, but we can certainly change their minds by enhancing the defences of your home.

We’d love to hear from you! Tell us your reactions and insights in the comments section below.
