No matter how hard you clean your home; dirt and bacteria will find new places to hide themselves. Warm and moist places tend to be the breeding ground for germs.

Many of us believe that the bathroom is the dirtiest part of the house when in fact the kitchen has the most germs. The areas where food is prepared are more prone to bacteria and faecal contamination.

Washing hands on the sink

Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the busiest and dirtiest parts of the house. According to the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), more than 75% of dish sponges and rags were contaminated with the bacteria called coliform.

Coliform is a kind of bacteria that includes escherichia coli (e. coli) and salmonella that are present in the digestive parts of animals and humans that can be found in their wastes. Other tainted areas are countertops, cutting boards and the kitchen sink.

Helpful tip: It’s advisable to change your kitchen sponges every week to avoid faecal contamination.

Knobs, handles and switches

Light switches, knobs, and handles are one of the dirtiest items in our home. They’re harbourers of harmful germs and bacteria, causing fungal and viral infections.

When cleaning your home, ensure that knobs, handles, and switches are on top of your to-do list. Sometimes we tend to overlook these small items because we're focused on larger surfaces such as floors and furniture.

This will not only make your house tidy, but it will also reduce the risk of getting a disease.

Helpful tip: Always wash your hands before cooking, eating and after using the bathroom to stop this form of germ breeding from occurring.

Bathroom

There’s no surprise that the place where we clean our body holds thousands of bacteria. The moisture in the bathroom is the ideal spot for the proliferation of germs.

Some of the bacteria that can be found in bathrooms are bacteroides, e. coli, streptococcus, and salmonella. We’re exposed to these types of bacteria every day, the best way to stop them from spreading is to wash your hands regularly.

Damaged furniture, asbestos, leaks and stains on walls also contribute dirt on your bathroom. That’s why bathroom renovations in Castle Hills and Southern Highlands have increased because residents are trying to prevent further damages to their homes and their health.

Helpful tip: The best way to prevent the growth of any bacteria in your tub or shower is to dry the surface after each use.
