Your kitchen is perhaps the room in which bad design decision become the most obvious. It’s the area of your home that you do the most ‘work’ in, and while you’re milling around whipping up a feast, a lack of design cohesion can be truly frustrating.

As such, it’s important to think about how you’ll make your space work for you, rather than the other way around. If you’re thinking about renovating your kitchen in the Southern Highlands, here are 6 design ideas that’ll help to make the space as ergonomic as possible.

1. Place your bin drawer underneath your cutting space

A simple tip, but an important one. Wherever you chop your food there’ll be waste generated, so it’s important to have a bin close by. Ideally right in front of you!

2. Position your dishwasher near your sink

Most people will place their dirty dishes near their sink, where they can rinse them off before placing them in the dishwasher. Thus it’s vital that you install your dishwasher right next to the sink.

3. Utilise rotating shelving in the corners

Corner cabinetry is always a hassle – a small opening guards a lot of space, making it hard to utilise. But with rotating ‘lazy Susan’ style shelving, you can use this area to its full potential!.

4. Hide the microwave in an appropriately high cabinet

Any modern kitchen should feature a microwave, but it’ll inevitably be left out on the countertop in broad daylight. To bring a minimalist look to your kitchen try to hide it away in cabinetry – high enough for a tall person but low enough for a short person to use comfortably.

5. Use pull out drawers in base cabinets

Getting on your hands and knees to reach to the back of a bottom cabinet is annoying. Instead, utilise pull out drawers within low cabinetry.

6. Store items by weight rather than by frequency of use

This is a common trap for new kitchen owners. It’s important to put lighter items, rather than less used items, in the hardest to access shelves. This makes your kitchen a far safer place. Design the cabinetry appropriately.
